What Can and Can’t Go In a Dumpster: A Guide to Safe Disposal

Prioritize safety by knowing what can go in a dumpster and what needs to be disposed of separately.

April 15, 2025

A dumpster rental is an excellent way to streamline any renovation, construction, or cleanout project. However, not everything can go in a dumpster. Here’s a look at what is and isn’t suitable for dumpster disposal—and alternative disposal solutions for off-limits items.

Dumpster-Friendly Items

You can load up your dumpster with a range of different items. As long as you don’t bypass the weight limit or fill line, you can almost always use a dumpster to haul away:

  • Yard waste
  • Household trash
  • Fabric and clothing
  • Wooden furniture
  • Drywall
  • Concrete
  • Plywood
  • Bricks
  • Tile
  • Stone

Your dumpster rental company likely has specific rules about acceptable items, so always check with them before including any of the above. It’s always worth getting that information at the start rather than backtracking after you’ve begun.

Possible Dumpster Disposal

Dumpster rental companies often have different rules about what they will and won’t take. These rules could be due to local regulations or company-specific policies designed to protect equipment and employees.

Disposal rules can vary when it comes to items like:

  • Mattresses
  • Upholstered furniture
  • Small appliances (toasters, microwaves, etc.)
  • Electronics
  • Batteries
  • Extensive food waste (eg, excess food from a large event)
  • Tree stumps

In some cases, the amount of certain items can determine whether or not they’re accepted. For example, a small number of electronics may be acceptable, but not half a dumpster’s worth. If you’re unsure, always check with your dumpster rental company to avoid inadvertently complicating your disposal process or incurring additional fees.

Prohibited Items

Some items are never okay to dispose of in a dumpster. Prohibited items can cause safety hazards during the disposal process or after being placed in a landfill.

Items that should never go in a dumpster include:

  • Chemicals, solvents, pesticides, and herbicides
  • Refrigerators, air conditioners, and fluorescent tubes
  • Hazardous or biomedical waste
  • Tires, motor oil, and transmission oil
  • Paint, lacquer, and adhesives
  • Asbestos
  • Hot water tanks and propane tanks

In many cases, these items are flammable or could become flammable if they come in contact with other substances. Many can also allow dangerous chemicals to enter local soil and water systems if disposed of incorrectly.

Safe Disposal of Hazardous Items

Instead of relying on dumpsters or landfills for disposal, finding alternative solutions for household hazardous waste is critical. With a little effort, it’s possible to dispose of dangerous waste products without endangering yourself or your community.

Many towns and cities offer designated drop-off locations or collection days for household hazardous waste. You can contact your local government or waste management department for specific information.

You can also contact the manufacturer or seller of the product you need to get rid of. Many offer safe recycling or disposal options for products they make or sell. If not, they may be able to direct you to other resources.

If you’re unsure how to dispose of particular items, you can also check resources like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for information. Specialized waste management companies also facilitate hazardous waste disposal in some regions.
