Need Help Decluttering Before You Move Out? Try These Tips!

Decluttering might just be the hardest part of moving out. We hope these tips will help make the process go a little bit smoother for you!

August 31, 2021

Are you moving out of your house soon?

If so, then you’ll likely want to do a massive decluttering project first. After all, the more unused junk, clothing, and old furniture you can get rid of before packing, the better.

Fortunately, D. Barry Rubbish Inc. is here to help with professional labor and affordable dumpster rentals! We’ll haul all of your junk out to our dumpster and drive it away for you.

However, first you have to declutter. To get you started, here are some of our favorite tips.

Go Room by Room

Start with the most challenging room first. For many of us, that’s probably the basement, garage, attic, or whatever our designated “storage space” is. Getting this room decluttered and out of the way first will make the process feel easier as it goes on.

And if the whole space feels too big and overwhelming at first, just start with one small corner.

Make Piles

One tried-and-true decluttering method is to separate everything into three distinct piles:

  1. Things you want to keep
  2. Things you want to donate
  3. Things you want to throw away

And before you say you want to keep everything, take a page out of Marie Kondo’s book.

Bag It Up

Once you’ve designated which items you’re donating and throwing away, put them in two different colored trash bags so you can quickly tell them apart at a glance.

For bulkier discard items like old electronics and furniture, mark them with post-its so it’s clear that they’re meant to be hauled away. Doing this will make our job a lot easier, and it will speed up our turnaround considerably.
